About Us

Matthew P Edwards Elena M Edwards

Japan Translate was established in April 2001 by Matthew Edwards, the Senior Partner.

Matthew has been closely involved with Japan for over 15 years. After graduating with a First Class Honours degree in Japanese from Cambridge University in 1994, Matthew worked for a number of years in the reinsurance industry, specialising in the Japanese market. This involved frequent trips to Tokyo and first-hand familiarisation with the world of Japanese business. Matthew subsequently worked for the Investor Relations division of a major Japanese consumer electronics firm.

Matthew is a qualified Member of the Institute of Translation & Interpreting (for Japanese to English translation) and a Member of the Institute of Linguists, as well as an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Interpreting fees are charged per day or half day, with any overtime calculated per hour. Travelling and other applicable expenses are normally payable by the client.

IT Issues and Quality Control

The vast majority of our work is carried out electronically, with files for translation received and returned by e-mail. An electronic file is always to be preferred if available.Files can be accepted in all the major formats, including Microsoft Word/Excel/PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat (PDF)/Illustrator. All of our translations are carefully proofread before being returned to the client. We can supply files by e-mail, on a floppy or Zip disk, on CD, or as a hard copy.

Translation - Not so simple

Many people might be forgiven for thinking that anyone fluent in a foreign language can translate, as long as they have a reasonably good dictionary to hand.

However, being fluent in another language in itself doesn’t make someone a good translator. Translation, at least of a professional quality, takes a high level of familiarity with the culture of both the source and target languages, a knowledge of the subject matter concerned, an eye for detail, a good written style in the target language (it seems obvious, but all too often this is not the case) and excellent research resources. Translation errors can have dire, and sometimes comical consequences.

In this age of information, faithful and effective cross-cultural communication is more important than ever before, and at Japan Translate we pride ourselves on serving our clients’ needs accurately and efficiently. For more information on what a good translation requires we would direct you to the ITI’s guide for businesses Translation - getting it right (which can be downloaded as a PDF file).
